This is the Readme file for new users of One-Step FAXHAVEN, (Readme.fh).
Copyright (c) 1996 by HTF Consulting.
You can get a hard copy of this file by entering "Print readme.fh".
This file contains information about the following subjects:
0) What FAXHAVEN is
1) Installing FAXHAVEN,
2) First-Time use: (A New-User tututorial)
3) General information about the shareware distribution method,
4) Information required by the ASP, (Assoc. of Shareware Professionals),
5) A Disclaimer,
6) How to register, registration benefits and, Product support
============================================================================
0) WHAT FAXHAVEN IS
============================================================================
One-Step FAXHAVEN is a complete application for sending, receiving and
processing Group 3 FAXes with your PC. It is DOS-based and Function-key driven.
There are no special hardware requirements for FAXHAVEN other than a FAX modem.
FAXHAVEN includes the stand-alone product One-Step High Quality FAX (HQ-FAX),
for building and sending letter-quality FAXes.
============================================================================
1) INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
============================================================================
As you are reading this Readme file, it is assumed that you have trans-
ferred the complete umcompressed FAXHAVEN package to a diskette. It is NOT
necessary to do so. If you have downloaded the FAXHAVEN.zip file and unzipped
it into a temporary directory, the installation procedure works ok, from
your C: drive.
1) Mount the installation diskette into drive A: or B:
2) Enter A: or B: Make sure that the DOS prompt changes from
C:> to A:>, or from C:> to B:>. This is very important!
3) Enter "Install". If you wish the package to install itself on any
other than C:\FAXHAVEN, enter the full pathname in the Install command.
Example (1): "Install D:\Faxhaven",
Example (2): "Install C:\FAXworks"
Now you can watch FAXHAVEN install itself. It will only take a minute.
This install procedure will NOT update your Autoexec.bat file. It will
place a customized "FH.bat" file in the root directory, drive C:, so
that it will change to the C:\FAXHAVEN directory (or the directory that
you specified) when starting FAXHAVEN.
=======================================================================
2) FIRST TIME USE
=======================================================================
We strongly recommend to new users of FAXHAVEN that the following procedure be
followed to get acquainted with the product. It is assumed that you have a
functioning FAX modem when you are ready to excercise FAXHAVEN. If not, you
may follow these instructions to get the feel of FAXHAVEN, but you will not be
able to receive and/or process FAXes.
A) First, print out this file "Readme.fh" if you have not already done so and
have it handy.
B) Next, let's view some TIFF files, even if they aren't FAXes.
1) Enter "FH" at the DOS prompt. The FAXHAVEN main menu will appear.
2) Enter <F5>. The Receive Processing screen will appear.
3) Use the <TAB> key to position the cursor to the File Ext. field.
Enter "TIF".
4) Enter <F2>. All of the TIFF files in the FAXHAVEN directory will be
listed on the screen.
5) Enter <shift><F2>. All of the TIFF files listed on this screen will be
selected for processing.
6) Enter <F5> again. The View Processsing screen will appear. The selected
TIFF files will be listed here and pre-selected.
7) Enter <F1> and briefly study the help file for this screen.
Observe that the Function keys are described first, and then
the user input fields are described.
8) Enter <F5> again. Each TIFF file will be displayed in turn. Study the
information on the screen before the image is displayed to
learn how to navigate through the image.
When you have viewed all of the images the View Processing scrn reappears.
9) Enter <ESC>ape. This will return you to the Receive Processing screen.
C) Next, let's print some TIFF sample files, even if they aren't FAXes.
This will only work if you have an HP Laserjet printer as LPT1. If you don't
have such a printer as LPT1, skip this step. Later when you learn how to
modify your FAXHAVEN configuration, you can return to this step.
1) Enter <shift><F2>. All of the TIFF files listed on this screen will be
selected.
2) Enter <F6>. The Print Processsing screen will appear. The selected TIFF
files will be listed here and pre-selected.
3) Enter <F1> and briefly study the help file for this screen.
4) Enter <F6> again. Each TIFF file will be printed in turn. This will take
a few of minutes. When FAXHAVEN has printed all of the image
files a status message indicates that printing is complete.
5) Enter <ESC>ape. This will return you to the Receive Processing screen.
D) Next, let's convert some sample TIFF files to another image format.
1) Enter <shift><F2>. All of the TIFF files listed on this screen will be
selected.
2) Enter <F8>. The Convert Processsing screen will appear. The selected TIFF
files will be listed here and pre-selected.
3) Enter <F1> and briefly study the help file for this screen.
4) Enter <F8> again. Each TIFF file will be converted to a PCX file. This
will take a couple of minutes. When FAXHAVEN has converted
all of the image files a status message indicates that
conversion is complete.
5) Enter <ESC>ape. This will return you to the Receive Processing screen.
E) Next, let's archive some sample TIFF files.
ATTENTION!! Archiving is only available to registered users.
1) Enter <shift><F2>. All of the TIFF files listed on this screen will be
selected.
2) Enter <F9>. The Archive Processsing screen will appear. The selected TIFF
files will be listed here and pre-selected. Observe that "FHA"
(FaxHaven Archive) is the output format.
3) Enter <F1> and briefly study the help file for this screen.
Enter <F9> again. Each TIFF file will be converted to a FHA file. This will
take a couple of minutes. When FAXHAVEN has archived all of
the image files a status message indicates that archiving is
complete.
4) Enter <ESC>ape. This will return you to the Receive Processing screen.
F) Next, let's modify the FAXHAVEN configuration.
1) Enter <ESC>ape. This will return you to the Main Menu screen.
2) Enter <F2>. The FAXHAVEN Configuration screen will appear.
3) Enter <F1> and briefly study the help file for this screen.
Observe that the Function keys are described first, and then
the user input fields are described.
The default configuration will appear. Here you can customize your
configuration to suit your needs. You can move the cursor from
field to field with the <TAB> key.
If you have an higher class of video monitor than EGA, you may
enter this information in the video type field. You may enter
'VGA', 'SVGA', or 'HIGH', for VGA, Super VGA or high resolution.
If you don't have an HP Laserjet printer on LPT1, you may
change the print format field. Study the help information to
determine what to enter to identify your printer.
You are now ready to try step 'C' above, if you skipped it.
You should decide where you wish to store converted FAXes, what
format they will most often be converted to, and where you wish
your archived FAXes to be stored. You do not need to make any
changes to these fields. You may do so later if necessary.
4) Enter <F10> (if you have made any changes to these fields), to save the
new configuration.
5) Enter <ESC>ape. This will return you to the FAXHAVEN main menu screen.
You are now ready to try printing in step 'C' above, if you
skipped it.
G) Next, let's activate and deactivate the FAX receive function.
1) Enter <F3>. This will activate the FAXHAVEN receive processing function.
2) Enter <F6>. This will cause FAXHAVEN to go into quiet mode.
The video screen will be blanked and the disk drive(s) will be
parked. You can leave your PC overnight like this, ready to
receive FAXes.
3) Enter <F6> again. This will cause FAXHAVEN to exit quiet mode.
4) Enter <F4>. This will de-activate the FAXHAVEN receive processing
function. FAXHAVEN will report on the status line if you have
received any new FAXes. If you have any received FAXes,
you may want to try viewing, printing or converting them now.
H) Next, let's take a peek at HQ-FAX.
HQ-FAX is a stand-alone product for creating and sending letter-quality
FAXes. It is included with FAXHAVEN.
Enter <F7>. The HQFAX screen appears. Yep, there it is.
FYI: HQ-FAX has it's own tutorial. See the First Time Use section in
the file "Readme.hqf".
Enter <ESC>ape. This will return you to the FAXHAVEN main menu.
We hope that this is enough of an excercise to get you familiar with FAXHAVEN.
When you need technical support, we will be happy to assist you, but we will
want to know how far you got with this tutorial. Happy FAXing!

3) DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
==========================================================================
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying.
If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to
register. Individual programs differ on details, some request registration
while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the
software to an updated program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as
stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like
commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality.
(In both cases, there are good programs and bad ones)! The main difference
is in the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right
to copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written permission
before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should
find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commer-
cial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier,
because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low,
prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee --
if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.
You must treat this software just like a book. An example is that this
software may be used by any number of people and may be freely moved from
one computer location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
being used at one location while it's being used at another. Just as a book
cannot be read by two different persons at the same time.
You are encouraged to pass a copy of FAXHAVEN along to your friends for
evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if they find that
they can use it. All registered users will receive a copy of the latest
version of the FAXHAVEN product.
Commercial users of FAXHAVEN must register and pay for their copies of
FAXHAVEN within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn.
Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting HTF Consulting at the
address listed below.
Anyone distributing FAXHAVEN for any kind of remuneration must first contact
HTF Consulting at the address below for authorization. This authorization
will be automatically granted to distributors recognized by the (ASP) as
adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distributors
may begin offering FAXHAVEN immediately. However HTF Consulting must be
advised so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest
version of FAXHAVEN).
=========================================================================
4) ASP OMBUDSMAN STATEMENT
=========================================================================
The ASP Board has set up an office of Ombudsman and appointed an ASP member
as Ombudsman. The Ombudsman's sole role is to mediate disputes between ASP
members and their customers. The Ombudsman reports to the Board situations
where he/she feels Board action or knowledge is appropriate.
All ASP Members and Associate Members are required to cooperate with the
Ombudsman when so requested. The following text is required by the ASP.
[This program is produced by HTF Consulting, a member of the Association
of Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware
principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-related
problem with an ASP member by contacting the member directly, ASP may be
able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem
with an ASP member, but does not provide technical support for members'
products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon,
MI, 49442-9427 USA, FAX 616-788-2765 or send a CompuServe message via
CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536.]
==========================================================================
5) DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT
==========================================================================
Users of FAXHAVEN must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
"FAXHAVEN is supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties, expressed
or implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of merchant-
ability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no liability for
damages, direct or consequential, which may result from the use of FAXHAVEN."
FAXHAVEN is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the user
for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but please do
not give FAXHAVEN away altered or as part of another system. The essence of
"user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users with
quality software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for
programmers to continue to develop new products.
